Before the 1990s P.R.China criminalized the LGBT population. Without family law and marriage law for LGBT couples, many resorted to secret rendezvous for sexual activities, with the risk of police arrests. In this searing social drama, the interrogation of a gay man in Bejing by a straight police officer develops into a relationship neither man could have ever anticipated. The release of this movie prompted the Chinese government to put director Zhang Yuan under house arrest, and confiscated his passport. His friends smuggled this movie out of the country so it could be shown at the 1997 Cannes film festival.
